Red light or near-infrared? How photobiomodulation differs by depth

Red light therapy is a form of photobiomodulation. Specific wavelengths of light reach the tissue and act as a signal that cells can respond to, affecting energy production, blood flow, inflammation and healing.
Two wavelengths, two jobs
- Red light works mainly near the surface, which makes it relevant to skin.
- Near-infrared light travels deeper, so it is used for muscles, joints and recovery.
Unlike ultraviolet radiation, the wavelengths used in photobiomodulation do not damage the skin.
Who might consider it
People look at red light for skin glow, post-workout soreness and muscle recovery. Your doctor decides which light, which area and how often.
